Counting the world vs earning a place in it
NomadMania’s ambition is total. Its lists keep subdividing the planet — UN countries, regions, territories, island groups — so a traveler who has “done” the countries can keep going for years at ever-finer granularity. Verification is mostly self-reporting governed by community visit guidelines, with team review stepping in at serious thresholds such as claiming all 193 UN countries, a top-100 ranking, or more than 600 regions. It is a serious system, built by people who care about the difference between a real claim and a layover.
The structural difference is timing and evidence. NomadMania verifies claims after the fact, through attestment and review. Unlocked verifies the moment: at the Landmark, presence is checked server-side against timestamp, coordinates, reported accuracy, distance, and radius before the entry exists. There is nothing to review later because nothing unearned gets in — and you cannot backfill a decade of past trips into Unlocked, which NomadMania absorbs effortlessly.
If your travel self-image is a number that keeps rising, NomadMania is the honest home for it. If it is a shorter list where every line is provable, that is Unlocked’s whole design.
Where NomadMania is the better tool
This is the part to be blunt about: if you want the community, NomadMania is the community. Its rankings, forums, regional envoys, interviews, podcast, annual travel awards, and in-person conferences are a real social world, and for its members that world is the product. Nothing else in this category delivers it, and Unlocked deliberately does not try — there are no points, no leaderboards, and no public feeds here at all.
Where Unlocked is the better tool
NomadMania records that you say you went; it does not, as a product, preserve what the day was — there is no image layer attached to a region tick. Unlocked’s entries carry more than their own existence: unlocking a Landmark permanently unlocks its curated Experiences, and any of them can later produce a Memory, a generated image of you at that landmark built from your private reference photos and clearly disclosed as generative. The list is the artifact in one; the moment is the artifact in the other.
