Unlocked vs Google Maps Timeline

Unlocked vs Google Maps Timeline,
a log vs a record.

You already own half of this comparison. Timeline is free, automatic where it is enabled, and quietly competent at logging where your phone has been. The honest question is whether a log is the same thing as a travel record — and for a lot of jobs, Timeline is all you need.

Full disclosure: Unlocked is our app, and this comparison is published by us. So yes, we are biased. The deal on this page is thatGoogle Maps Timeline’s strengths are stated first and plainly — where it is the better tool, the page says so.

Quick verdict

Is Google Maps Timeline enough, or do you need Unlocked?

For “where was I last Tuesday?” Timeline wins by default: it is free, automatic, and searches the past better than any travel app. Install Unlocked when you want travel to accumulate into something you chose — verified landmark arrivals with dates, badges, city progress, and optional Memories. Keep Timeline on for utility; the two do not compete for the same job.

The comparison

What you are actually choosing between.

A log that happens anyway vs a record you choose

Timeline’s strength is that it is not a product you tend. Where enabled, it records your phone’s locations in the background, stores them on the device, and lets you search them later. As a utility — recalling an evening, settling an argument, finding that restaurant — it is excellent, free, and already in your pocket.

The trade-offs are on the record side. Places are inferred rather than curated, so the cathedral and the parking lot are the same kind of entry. Recent versions default to automatically deleting history after a period of months, so the log ages out. And because it is opt-in, any stretch of travel with it off simply does not exist.

Unlocked runs the other way: nothing is automatic, and that is the point. An entry exists because you stood at a Landmark and the presence check passed — timestamp, coordinates, reported accuracy, distance, and radius validated at that moment. The record is smaller and cost effort, which is exactly why it holds meaning.

Where Timeline is the better tool

If your need is recall — “where was I?” — do not install anything. Timeline is free, automatic, on-device, and better at that job than any travel product in this category, including ours. This page exists for the job it does not do: a deliberate, permanent record of the places that mattered.

Where Unlocked is the better tool

Timeline cannot tell you which landmarks you reached, award anything for them, or turn an arrival into a keepsake. If you want travel to accumulate — dated unlocks, city-by-city progress, badges, and Memories you can generate from verified visits — that layer simply does not exist in a location log.

Honest lists

Where each app wins.

The honest list: what Timeline does better

Four jobs where the free log beats us. We would rather send you there than pretend a passport app is a utility.

  • Price and effort. Timeline is free and records nothing extra for you to do. Unlocked is free to use, but its record costs presence — you have to actually go.
  • Recall and search. Looking up where you were on a date is the core of Timeline and an afterthought at best in travel apps.
  • Coverage of unremarkable days. Timeline logs everything, including the towns with no landmark. Unlocked only sees its curated catalog.
  • Data locality. Recent Timeline versions store history on your device. Unlocked verifies presence server-side because an unlock is only worth something if it is checked — a deliberate trade, but a trade.

What Unlocked does better

Four jobs the log was never built for.

  • Permanence. Timeline’s defaults age old history out; Unlocked’s unlocks, badges, and dates are permanent.
  • Verified arrivals. Presence is checked at the moment of every unlock — a server-confirmed arrival, not an inferred place.
  • Keepsakes. Unlocked entries become city progress, badges, and optional generated Memories. A log produces no output.
  • A chosen record. Nothing enters Unlocked by accident. If the point of a travel record is that it meant something, that is the product.

Decision rules

Choose by the job, not the hype.

Choose Google Maps Timeline if you want:

  • the job is recall — finding where you were on a past date
  • you want zero effort and zero cost, forever
  • you want every movement recorded, including places with no landmark
  • you would rather travel data stayed on your device than be verified anywhere

Choose Unlocked if you want:

  • travel should accumulate into something — dates, badges, city progress
  • each entry should be a place you provably stood, by name
  • you want the option of generated Memories from verified arrivals
  • you want sharing to be a deliberate act, not an accident of a log

Bottom line

The verdict.

Timeline is infrastructure and it wins its category on price, effort, and recall. Unlocked is a passport and wins the jobs infrastructure ignores: verification, permanence, and keepsakes. They do not compete for the same job — the practical answer is to keep Timeline on and install Unlocked for the record you build.

Useful details

Questions, answered plainly.

Does Google Maps Timeline work everywhere?

Wherever your signed-in phone goes — but only while Location History (now called Timeline) is turned on. Google has made it opt-in, stores it on your device, and recent versions default to automatically deleting it after a period of months unless you change the setting. Trips taken while it is off are simply absent.

Can Timeline prove I visited a landmark?

It can show that your device was somewhere at some time, but it is a personal log, not a verification system. Unlocked validates presence at each Landmark at the moment of unlocking — timestamp, coordinates, reported accuracy, distance, and radius — so unlocks are server-confirmed arrivals.

Does Unlocked drain battery the way continuous logging does?

No. Unlocked reads location when you are at a Landmark to verify an unlock; there is no continuous background tracking. Timeline only exists because location recording runs in the background as part of your phone’s ordinary activity.

Can I import my Timeline history into Unlocked?

No. Unlocked unlocks only from live, checked presence at a landmark, so past travel cannot be backfilled — including from Timeline, GPS exports, or any other log. Every entry in the record is a day you actually went.

Is one of them better for privacy?

They collect different things. Timeline records continuous movement and keeps it on your device (with Google account trade-offs you should read about). Unlocked collects one verified sample per landmark visit and runs its checks server-side. Neither posture dominates the other; which is better depends on whether continuous collection or server verification bothers you more.
