Mumbai by Train and Taxi: Colaba, the Bay and the Shrines
Work one side of the island city by train, taxi and ride-hail: start at the Gateway of India on Apollo Bunder, walk up to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, then follow Marine Drive’s Art Deco curve north. Continue to the washing pens of Dhobi Ghat, the causeway of Haji Ali Dargah and the golden shikhara of Siddhivinayak Temple at Prabhadevi. Every transfer is an honest train or taxi ride, not a continuous walk.

Gateway of India
Begin on the Apollo Bunder waterfront, where Wittet’s basalt arch opens onto the harbour. Use the plaza, steps and waterfront parapet from permitted positions and keep ferry operations out of the frame. The plaza is public and always lively; the adjacent hotel frontage is a private area.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus
Ride or walk north to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and study Stevens’ Victorian Gothic railway cathedral from across the busy street. The station remains Central Railway’s working headquarters; interior access follows railway rules and requires permission, so the dome, pinnacles and carved facade carry the stop.

Marine Drive
Follow Marine Drive’s great Art Deco sweep along Back Bay. Use the public walkway and roadside railings, keeping off the tetrapods and the slippery sea wall, and let the curve of facades and palms set the pace. The promenade is public along its whole length and busiest at dusk.

Dhobi Ghat
Continue to Mahalaxmi and view the world’s largest open-air laundry from the public bridge on Dr E. Moses Road. Look across the grid of stone washing pens and drying lines while keeping workers at a respectful distance; the pens are private workplaces and never viewing floors.

Haji Ali Dargah
Walk the long causeway toward the white domed dargah on its islet, at permitted times and modest dress with head covering. The causeway can close at high tide and the shrine manages its own crowd flow, so check conditions before setting out and keep the sanctum out of the visit.

Siddhivinayak Temple
Finish at Prabhadevi beneath the temple’s gilt copper shikhara. Use the street approach from below the summit; photography is prohibited inside the temple and queues and security control the approach lane. The carved stone entrance and the neighbourhood’s evening flow close the day.

Can I follow this route as a continuous walk?
No. This itinerary is designed around Mumbai’s suburban trains, taxis and ride-hails between Colaba, the Fort district, the bay and the shrines north of Mahalaxmi. Use public walkways at each Landmark, and treat the long northbound legs as rides rather than a continuous walk.
Which stops need tickets or admission?
All six stops are free to approach from public ground; shrine rules apply at Haji Ali Dargah and Siddhivinayak Temple, and the CSMT interior requires railway permission. The Elephanta Caves are a separate full-day ferry trip and are outside this route.
